LRSC Coaching Staff

D. Jay Morissette (Head Coach) Jay has been the head coach of the team since the 1985-86 swim season and is an American Swim Coaches Association Level 4 certified coach.

A graduate of the University of Maine at Orono, he swam for Allan Switzer and still holds 2 University swim team records (50 + 100 freestyles). Prior to college he swam at the Kennebec Valley YMCA in Augusta under coach Ann Palozzi and still holds 3 team records there (50, 100, + 200 freestyles).

An on again off again masters swimmer over the years, his best seasons involved a 2nd place finish at the 1989 Masters U.S. nationals in the 50 free (20.97) and at the 1996 Masters world championships three 4th place finishes. While coach at the Bath YMCA he has coached one national champion, 12 YMCA All Americans and over 75 YMCA top 16 swimmers. He has also coached several senior national level swimmers and has coached one Olympic trials swimmer for several years of her age group career.

His teams have won 19 YMCA state titles with 3 runner up positions and six out of the last 10 U.S. league state championship team titles, finishing 2nd in four. He was named YMCA coach of the year in 2005 and U.S coach of the year in 2007.

Brian “Sponge” Savage (assistant swim coach) Brian began his career as a swimmer at the Bath YMCA as a high school freshman. He has been coaching at the Long Reach Swim Club since the 2001-2002 season and is an integral part in motivating and training athletes to be more than they think they can be.

He is on the Board of Directors with the Maine Swimming U.S. Swimming League and works in concert with the YMCA League's technical branch as well as running and managing several large high school and age group meets each year.

Reg Smart Reginald "Reg" Smart is a 6th generation Australian who is in his late 60's.
Reg was coached by Australia's Olympic coach for 5 years in the 50's before coaching an Australian age group coach for his home town swim team outside Sydney.

A former practicing architect, minister and chaplain at Harvard University, collegiate dean and a university professor of human relations, Reg some 53 years later finds himself on the pool deck at the Bath Y helping with the beginner practice group.

During those 53 years he spent time in homes in 26 countries. His four sons have their dad's swimming ability and his love of developing the skills that make winners.

Ross Hawks Ross Hawks is a 2007 Morse High School graduate. A swimmer for both LRSC and Morse High School, Ross developed into a state finalist in several events also qualifying for YMCA New England Championships over several seasons. Ross assists with the 2 younger practice groups and is cutting his teeth in the realm of age group coaching.
